CHAPTER 21

Moonlight streamed in through the windows and added a touch of silver to the golden light from the candles burning throughout the room. Valerie and Theo were sprawled across one of the couches in what had been some kind of common room for their gang before they moved to the Court of Fire. To their right, Mordren and Eilan sat in separate armchairs but wore matching expressions on their faces. Their dark brows were slightly creased as if calculating the odds of success. Idra had taken up position by the back wall and watched the rest of us silently, while Evander paced in front of the window.

“So…” Valerie began, drawing out the word. “I know that you,” she flapped her hand in my direction, “kind of specialize in crazy, but this plan is pretty crazy, right? And we don’t even have a whole plan yet. Just a general end goal or two.”

“She has a point.” Mordren inclined his head towards the brown-haired thief. “If it was only Anron and his soldiers, we might stand a chance of winning a potential battle. But as things stand now… there are six of us against three legions of High Elves and three other courts.”

“So let’s add another end goal then,” I said. “Find a way to get rid of those other two commanders and their legions.”

“And how–” Theo began, but Evander cut him off.

“Seven.”

We all turned to stare at him. He had been pacing back and forth in front of the window while I recanted my meeting with Ellyda, Hadeon, and the other princes. But now his dark green eyes were locked on the Prince of Shadows.

“There are seven of us,” Evander said.

A cold smile spread across Mordren’s lips. “Since you do not actually have any skills to contribute, you do not count.”

“Mordren,” I interrupted and shook my head at him in warning.

“I can fight my own battles, Kenna,” Evander snapped at me before turning back to Mordren and throwing his arms out. “What is your problem with me?”

“My problem is that I dislike people like you. You just leech off everyone else and never contribute anything of your own.” Mordren raised his eyebrows. “What have you done since Kenna freed you? Since Kenna fought Volkan Flameshield in the arena and killed him to free you and everyone else? What have you done since then? What have you contributed to her rule?”

Anger and embarrassment flushed Evander’s face. “I… I haven’t figured out what I want to do yet.”

“Want has nothing to do with it. What you want to do is irrelevant. I asked what you have contributed to Kenna’s rule. You have lived in her home and eaten her food for months. What have you done to earn your keep?”

“I have a lot of information.”

“Information that Kenna, as a former spy, most likely already knows. What else?”

“Well, I…”

Mordren slashed a hand through the air and shot him a disgusted look. “And that is my problem with you. Everyone here pulls their weight. Start thinking of what you can bring to the table.
